About Us

John W. Field Tree Service, Inc. is committed to providing quality tree care, safely delivered. We are a full-service tree care company offering tree removals, pruning, cabling, deep root fertilization, tree planting, stump grinding and lightning protection.

Founded in 2005 by John W. Field, Jr., we provide professional tree care to Berkshire County residents, companies and municipalities.  John W. Field Tree Service, Inc. maintains a full-time staff of well-trained tree care professionals who perform high quality work, safely and skillfully. We employ arborists who are ISA certified. Our crew has received EHAP (Electrical Hazards Awareness Program) training and are certified in First Aid and CPR. In addition, we work with a CTSP (Certified Treecare Safety Professional) to regularly train the staff in safe tree care practices.

Our size and staff commitment to quality allows us the opportunity to know our clients, anticipate their needs and provide maximum value from the services we provide. John W. Field Tree Service, Inc. is fully insured and can happily provide proof of our coverages.

John W. Field, Jr. - owner & Certified Arborist

With more than 26 years in the tree care and forestry industry, John brings a lifelong passion for tree preservation to every project. A Certified Arborist, he was drawn early on to the challenge and beauty of tree climbing, which naturally grew into his career.

John’s philosophy is simple: respect the tree and the community it serves. From preserving historic oaks to ensuring safe and efficient removals, his work reflects skill, dedication, and deep care for the living landscape.

Beyond his arborist work, John thrives on competition and adventure. He’s an avid CrossFitter and competitor, and also enjoys hunting, fishing, long-range shooting, riding his motorcycle, and driving classic muscle cars.

Within the arborist community, he values the camaraderie and connectedness among professionals who share a love for trees and the outdoors. His favorite tree, the White Oak, remains a symbol of that connection. Not only is it an incredible tree to climb, but it also plays a vital role in supporting wildlife, providing food for deer and countless other species.

Bob Fedell - Crane Operator & EMT

Bob has over 26 years of experience as an equipment operator and six years specializing in crane work. Certified through NCCCO, NCCER, and EHAP, he joined John W. Field Tree Service in 2019 after a lifelong friendship with John turned into a professional partnership.

On every job, Bob lives by the motto: never be the weakest link of the chain. His reliability and precision are essential on complex projects. A highlight of his career was coordinating with the FAA and Massachusetts authorities to secure crane operations at Pittsfield Airport, where he helped construct a 170’ free-span hangar.

Outside of tree work, Bob serves his community as an EMT and enjoys giving back through emergency response.

Dexter Mason - arborist & client care specialist

Dexter has been part of John W. Field Tree Service for nearly six years, following a long career in landscape design and project management. A Stockbridge School graduate and recipient of the MNLA Young Nursery Professional of the Year award, Dexter specializes in ornamental and fruit tree pruning, and is CDL and CPR certified.

He is known for treating clients with honesty and respect, providing clear assessments of tree health, and helping property owners find cost-effective solutions for both hazards and long-term care.

At home in Great Barrington, Dexter enjoys family life with his wife and wrangling their children, along with ongoing home and outdoor projects. His favorite tree is Stewartia pseudocamellia, admired for its year-round beauty, striking bark, and rare summer blossoms.

Paul sierau - certified Arborist, Climber & Crane Operator

Paul joined the team in 2017 and brings a wide range of certifications, including ISA Certified Arborist, EHAP, TRAQ, and crane & hoisting licenses. With a background as a firefighter and first responder, Paul combines technical skill with a steady, safety-first approach.

What drew him to the industry was the chance to make a positive impact on both community and nature—while working outdoors and with heavy equipment. His guiding principle: tree work is addition by subtraction. It’s not just about what is removed, but about the healthier, safer landscape left behind.

Outside of work, Paul enjoys riding motorcycles, building things, and—most of all—spending time with his wife and son.

Christopher W. Sweet - Certified Arborist & Client Advisor

Chris brings 38 years of experience in the green industry. Starting on his family’s Christmas tree farm at age 10, he went on to run his own company, Sweet Tree Service, before joining John W. Field Tree Service in 2023. An ISA Certified Arborist with multiple safety and first aid certifications, Chris continues to serve as a trusted advisor to clients while also operating his own Seekonk Tree Farm.

His philosophy: deliver results that both client and arborist can take pride in. Over the years, Chris has been amazed by how equipment and techniques have advanced to make tree care both safer and more efficient.

Beyond his professional life, Chris has dedicated decades to community service—as a volunteer firefighter, youth coach, and lifelong leader in Boy Scouts. He also enjoys hunting, hiking, gardening, and backpacking.

lance Ward - Crew leader, Arborist & Crane operator

With more than 20 years of arborist experience, Lance has been with the company for nearly a decade. His expertise goes beyond tree care—he has operated cranes to set modular homes, lift airplane hangars, and even position stone molding for historic buildings. His communication skills and attention to detail make him a favorite among clients.

Raised in Great Barrington, Lance grew up immersed in horticulture—his family founded Ward’s Nursery and ran landscaping businesses across the Berkshires. This early start instilled both skill and a deep love for plant care.

When he’s not on the job, Lance enjoys cooking with his wife (using fresh food from his local CSA), exploring the outdoors with their puppy, and working on his new home. Like John, his favorite tree is the White Oak, “the leaf pattern and the bark structure and the overall structure of the tree make it perfect.”
